Sandro Tonali is scheduled to resume his competitive football career following his suspension for betting on his former clubs.
Following an investigation into a betting inquiry, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) imposed a sanction on the Italy international, which resulted in a 10-month ban and eight months of rehabilitation.
In May of this year, Tonali was sanctioned by the English Football Association (FA) for 50 breaches of the FA's betting regulations. He was issued a suspended two-month suspension that will remain in effect for the 2024-25 season, as well as a £20,000 fine ($25,721.10).
Given that the suspension was lifted, the Newcastle United midfielder is now eligible to resume competitive play in less than two weeks and will not be subject to any portion of the two-month sanction, provided that he does not violate the FA's wagering regulations further.
Consequently, Tonali may be eligible to play against Nottingham Forest or Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, contingent upon the date of Newcastle's Carabao Cup match.
Newcastle United has announced that Sandro Tonali will be eligible for selection on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, following the conclusion of his ten-month suspension from competitive football, according to an official statement posted on the Magpies website.
"The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) that the player's sporting sanction will extend until and including Tuesday, August 27th."
The Magpies will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at St. James' Park on Sunday, September 1st (kick-off 1:30pm BST), following their trip to Nottingham Forest for the Carabao Cup second round on Monday, August 26th (fixture date and time to be determined).
