The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and its member companies, Betway, FanDuel, and bet365, have announced their intention to establish and provide assistance for a national athlete education campaign in Canada.
In order to reduce the potential threat to athletes, sports, and the regulated market from match-fixing and fraud associated with sports wagering, they have committed to investing a minimum of CA$300,000 (US$220,000) in the program over a three-year period.
The announcement was made at the "Symposium on Competition Manipulation and Gambling in Sport" in Toronto. The CFL, CPL, Hockey Canada, NFL, NBA, and NHL, as well as national and provisional governments, licensing and regulatory authorities such as the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, were among the attendees.
Additionally, the project financing partners are currently engaged in a dialogue regarding the establishment of a delivery body, with the objective of completing the process within the next few weeks. In the second half of this year, the program is scheduled to introduce in-person athlete training, an online learning portal, an anonymous reporting app, and awareness-raising materials.
Jean-Francois Reymond, the Education Ambassador for IBIA, stated, "Our goal is to establish a program that is unparalleled in its scope and that safeguards the integrity of Canadian sport and the careers of Canadian athletes."
Betway CEO Anthony Werkman stated, "We are dedicated to the prevention of betting corruption on a global and local scale, and we are eager to collaborate with our fellow members to influence a more positive future for both sports organisations and regulators."
Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, expressed his enthusiasm for the dedication of our members, including Betway, FanDuel, and bet365, to sports wagering education and their willingness to contribute to this significant initiative.
"The positive impact this project will have on the integrity of Canadian sport and the players themselves is eagerly anticipated by all of the partners."
